Welcoming Waters, Luxury Locations, and Southern Society: The Legacy of Chick Springs Mineral Springs, Taylors SC
Located in Taylors South Carolina, the Chick Springs Mineral Springs reimagines the story of the antebellum south. Mineral Springs became popular as social hubs and luxury resorts, with the upsurge of health travel and leisure activities; mineral springs reimagined social classes in the south. Socialization at mineral springs was a catalyst for Southern manners and “Southern hospitality”. This presentation tells the story of Chick Springs Mineral Springs and the legacy it left behind. It examines how its story reflects themes of class distinction and a reimagined South that promotes Southern hospitality. This presentation will draw from personal accounts at the springs, newspaper advertisements, and academic materials of the antebellum south and mineral springs.

Symbolism in Art
Religious art throughout the Renaissance is full of symbolic references. I have found a passion for not only learning about these symbols, but to also understand them in such a way that I can apply similar symbols into my own work as an artist in a meaningful way. This research poster will explore paintings from art history that contain symbolism and identify the meanings of each symbol and recognize symbols of religious figures. This research poster will detail examples from art history and examples from my own artwork to offer a deeper understanding of these symbols and the message they are meant to convey.
Alyssa Glazer is a senior visual arts major with a minor in art history. Her achievements include working on campus in the gallery, working for open house tours for the art department, participating as an event leader in the Artrageous art events, and a featured artist in numerous exhibitions both on and off campus.

BeYoutiful: Just Shine As You are!
My children’s book “BeYoutiful: Shine as You Are!” originated as an idea for a community service initiative
dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for individuals with disabilities has developed into a creative poster and project of a lifetime. The inclusive environment that everyone desires was very difficult to find as an individual living with complete complex syndactyly, a birth defect that affects both the skin and bone makeup of my hands. There are many challenges associated with this condition, but the biggest struggle is bullying. Unfortunately, tormenting continues even as age increases, and it is mostly in part due to a lack of exposure and education. The hopes associated with creating a children’s picture book are that children from diverse backgrounds will be able to relate to and learn from it, hopefully fostering more respectful citizens. The publication process provides challenges such as manuscript creation and navigating different publishing avenues, which pushed me beyond my comfort zone. The book “Beyoutiful” will hopefully inspire children for generations to come with its cross-cultural understanding and provide young readers with the tools necessary to develop self-confidence and respect for others while learning to be comfortable in their skin and “just shine as they are!”Autumn Lockhart graduated from Boiling Springs High School in Spartanburg and is a junior early childhood education and Spanish double major. Her achievements include working as an orientation leader on campus, receiving a B1 level Spanish certificate, passing the early childhood Praxis 2, and studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, for four months.

Rhetoric of Chemistry Research Publications: An Analysis of Transitional Devices
Chemistry publications are the optimal method to share scientific information in the scientific community. Eight language features were analyzed based on their function as transitional devices. This research provides a better understanding of scientific communication and promotes higher quality scientific writing. Results conclude that prepositional phrases along with conjunctive adverbs are devices utilized most often by scientist, specifically, in the “Results” section in scientific publications.
Jermon Franklin graduated from Lexington High School and is a senior chemistry major with a minor in writing.
